====== jit's Bukobot 8 Duo (v1) build - how it was done ====== (Go back up to [[bukobot-assembly-documentation|Building a Bukobot - Assembly Instructions]]) (**Note:** In mid-2013, Deezmaker introduced version 2 of the Bukobot line. It has diverged from version 1 in many ways, so adding its documentation to the following pages would probably create a lot of confusion. But because the [[bukobot-assembly-documentation|v2 documentation]] is currently in its early stages, users of v2 may find it useful to read through this v1 documentation, keeping in mind that some of it does not apply to them. Those who wish to help document v2 may wish to copy-and-paste applicable sections from these older docs to the new. But please leave these docs intact, in support of v1 users.) This started out as one user's documentation of the building of one instance of the **Bukobot 8 Duo v1 kit**, the model that has dual extruders and a heated bed platform, but now it has multiple contributors and describes multiple models. Nearly everything here should apply equally well to all v1 models of the Bukobot. You are welcome to improve this crowdsourced documentation. Please note the licenses listed at the bottom of each page. This is not Deezmaker's "official" build manual. Their manual is still largely unwritten, and is likely to stay that way until they have shipped all of the Kickstarter machines, but do refer to the things that are [[bukobot-assembly-documentation|already there]], and check back there occasionally. Fairly complete, and extremely useful, [[bukobot-parts-list|parts lists]] have recently been added. Their manual may do things differently, in particular the order in which things are assembled. The build presented here assumes that the kit builder has limited space for assembly; the smallest subassemblies are built first, then assembled into larger subassemblies, then the frame is built last and everything added to it. The parts most likely to be damaged during the build are installed as late as possible, to minimize their handling. Now that many people have received their kits, there are multiple contributors to this documentation (nearly all of them volunteers) and it is changing on a daily basis. If you are building a kit and reading this documentation, and you reach a point where something doesn't make sense, go back to the beginning of the documentation and read it through to see if clarification has been added in the meantime. If the mystery remains, ask on the [[http://forum.bukobot.com/index.php?topic=2.0|forum]]. New errors creep into these pages all the time. Lots of other things change on this wiki too. If you are currently building a Bukobot, you should subscribe to the page change notification service. Look for the "Manage Subscriptions" button to the right. The wiki will tell you when the page you just left suddenly has improved information on it. This documentation is meant to be inclusive. It should apply to anyone who has received a v1 Bukobot kit, even the "early adopters" who received some parts that are significantly different than the ones currently shipping. Please resist the urge to delete text and images that do not apply to the kit you got. Once all of the early adopters have built their kits and started printing, and therefore have the ability to print the current parts for themselves, we can clean up the documentation. When documenting, be careful about the assumptions you make. Some kit builders got hardware that goes together differently. Some kit builders live in places that use different electricity. Some builders live in places where the local hardware store carries a very poor selection of metric hardware. Step-by-step documentation, including pictures, is highly desirable. A single picture that shows a completed assembly, with no clue as to how it was put together, is less helpful. If Assembly B incorporates Assembly A, please don't document Assembly B until Assembly A is thoroughly documented. This principle has been followed throughout, and is probably one of the primary reasons why people say nice things about these pages -- we try to avoid describing things we haven't actually done and don't fully understand, so all that is left are the things that are crystal clear. At the bottom of this page is an index to the pages describing things done while building the machines built by the people who have contributed to these pages. There are other pages, intended to be used for discussion of different ways of doing things: * [[heated-bed-preparation|What to do with the top and bottom surfaces of the heated platform]] * [[hot-end-thermal-management|What to do with the thermal insulation of the hot end]] * [[cleaning-up-printed-parts|What to do about printed plastic parts that need to be cleaned up]] Any contributions you can make to those pages would be especially appreciated, as some of us don't fully understand those subjects yet, and more documentation is needed. Photographs of the non-heated platforms are still needed. Photographs of the models smaller than 8" are still needed. As with all such things, there is no warranty that builds like the ones described here will work for you. Use eye protection. Don't do unsafe things. Keep children and pets away from things that can hurt them. Have fun. ----------- Some photos show printed parts lists. These are based on an early version of the Bill of Materials (BOM), and may not exactly match your kit. Some of these parts lists may also be incorrect; corrections, where known, are noted in the text. Some images should be added to more accurately reflect the current BOM (but without deleting the ones that apply to "early adopters"). If your kit came with a printed BOM, trust it first. If errors are found in //that// BOM, those errors should be documented on these pages, and the nice people at Deezmaker should be informed. If you are an "early adopter", and got your machine before Deezmaker started shipping in quantity, then you may have older versions of some parts. Deezmaker has changed a number of parts, primarily to make the printer easier to build and use. Compare your parts with those shown in the images; if they are different, then some of the things written and shown here may not apply to you, unless you switch to the newer parts. (One of the marvelous things about this device is that it enables you to make improvements to it by using the device to make its own improved parts.) These pages may be available for years after they are written. Bukobot designs are updated often. Things shown here may become outdated, so compare carefully with the parts you get in your kit. Please document new things, without removing documentation for old things. You really should read each page all the way through before doing anything even remotely resembling anything described on the page. Read the entire build description all the way through before doing anything else. If you start with a good set of [[jitsbuild-tools|tools]], your build will be much easier. Make an [[jitsbuild-inventory|inventory]] of the parts you receive before you begin building. Occasionally kits go out missing a part or two; the worst time to discover this is near the end of a long day of building. (Or perhaps it's the time when you first power up the machine and nothing happens.) Read the section on [[Cleaning up printed parts|cleaning up the 3D printed parts]]. The parts sometimes need finishing work such as enlarging holes for screws, or removing excess material left over from the printing process. Additions and improvements to that page would be particularly welcome. If you find yourself applying a lot of force to get something done, you're probably doing it wrong. You don't need any power tools to build this kit, although a small cordless screwdriver with a set of metric hex drivers will certainly speed things up. If you get to the end of a procedure and you have some hardware left over, put it back in its bag. Where it fits on the printer is probably described later.
